Overview

The primary objective of the Essential course is to develop an understanding of Graston Technique© therapy (GT) and how to apply it into the full spectrum of musculoskeletal treatment approaches. The course also instructs clinicians on the proper use of the instruments.

By the end of the training, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Graston Technique© brand instruments, GT treatments, potential effects, and benefits.
  • Identify and discuss the indications, contraindications (relative and absolute) of GT.
  • Review and develop a better understanding of soft tissue injury, healing and potential reactivity to instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (therapeutic and adverse).
  • Develop skill and competence in the GT application of IASTM to the major regions of soft tissue.

INSTRUCTOR

Reena Pathak

Reena believes that "Health care is most effective when there is a partnership between a patient and their health care providers. While many conditions can be addressed through positive lifestyle choices, it is my goal to assist your body's natural healing mechanisms and to show you how to best care for yourself outside of the office." Dr. Pathak has always had a passion for learning, and she decided to further her education at the National University of Health Sciences where she received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree and graduated summa cum laude. In addition to being a Diversified Chiropractor, she is a certified Graston Technique� Therapy Provider and Instructor, provider of Metagenics Supplements and FirstLine Therapy� Certified practitioner, certified Chronic Pain Management and Scar Release therapist, FIFA 11+ instructor, GLA:D Canada certified for osteoarthritis, McGill trained clinician and also certified in the Disability and Impairment Ratings using the 4th edition of the AMA guides. She graduated from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education, and from St. Clair College with a Medical Technology Diploma in Health Sciences. She is a medical laboratory technologist recognized by the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and a medical technologist recognized by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), in addition to being a licensed chiropractor in Ontario, Canada and in Michigan, USA. Prior to pursuing chiropractic, Dr. Pathak was a high school teacher and she had worked in cancer research at the University of Michigan.

3 HOUR PRECOURSE
Participants will identify & discuss the effects, benefits, physiological responses, indications & contraindications for the Graston Technique® therapy.
  • Welcome and introduction to technique
  • History, physiological rationale of IASTM, principles relating to soft-tissue dysfunction
  • Indications & contraindications
  • Anticipated responses and results from using GT instruments on soft-tissue conditions

Participants will observe & then demonstrate proper handholds and treatment strokes using GT instruments.
  • Introduction to the six GT stainless steel instruments
  • Description of each instrument
  • Proper handholds and treatment strokes
  • Lab instruction in scanning, sweeping, strumming, brushing, swiveling, scooping, j-strokes and framing on anterior thigh
  • How to make a soft-tissue assessment using the GT scanner
