Overview

The primary objective of the Essential course is to develop an understanding of Graston Technique© therapy (GT) and how to apply it into the full spectrum of musculoskeletal treatment approaches. The course also instructs clinicians on the proper use of the instruments.

By the end of the training, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Graston Technique© brand instruments, GT treatments, potential effects, and benefits.
  • Identify and discuss the indications, contraindications (relative and absolute) of GT.
  • Review and develop a better understanding of soft tissue injury, healing and potential reactivity to instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (therapeutic and adverse).
  • Develop skill and competence in the GT application of IASTM to the major regions of soft tissue.

INSTRUCTOR

Justine DeLuccio

Justine is a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, a manual therapy fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, a Graston Technique� instructor, and Graston Technique� Certified Clinician. She holds a number of movement and assessment based credentials including certificates in Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA1-Certified), CAFS - Certification in Applied Functional Science�, Functional Movement Screen and Y-Balance Test, 3D Maps, Spinal and Movement Breathing Assessment 1, and Kinesio� Taping (KT), Fascial Movement Taping (FMT I-II), TRX Qualified Sports Medicine Suspension Training and Rip Training. After nearly two decades in clinical practice, she opened Movement Logic orthopaedic manual & sports physical therapy P.A. in Lambertville to support her vision for professional autonomy. As the sole proprietor and practitioner, she treats individuals in all stages of life, recovery, recreation and performance, providing evidence-based treatment with a skill set that includes multimodal, eclectic, neuromyofascial and movement perspectives. She regularly utilizes connective tissue manual therapies such as Graston Technique� in her own practice. Justine has been a Graston Technique� instructor since 2005. She received an Associate degree in physical therapy from Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Science in physical therapy from Long Island University and was awarded the prestigious Mary McMillan Scholarship, a national award given by the American Physical Therapy Association.

3 HOUR PRECOURSE
Participants will identify & discuss the effects, benefits, physiological responses, indications & contraindications for the Graston Technique® therapy.
  • Welcome and introduction to technique
  • History, physiological rationale of IASTM, principles relating to soft-tissue dysfunction
  • Indications & contraindications
  • Anticipated responses and results from using GT instruments on soft-tissue conditions

Participants will observe & then demonstrate proper handholds and treatment strokes using GT instruments.
  • Introduction to the six GT stainless steel instruments
  • Description of each instrument
  • Proper handholds and treatment strokes
  • Lab instruction in scanning, sweeping, strumming, brushing, swiveling, scooping, j-strokes and framing on anterior thigh
  • How to make a soft-tissue assessment using the GT scanner
