Overview

The primary objective of the Essential course is to develop an understanding of Graston Technique© therapy (GT) and how to apply it into the full spectrum of musculoskeletal treatment approaches. The course also instructs clinicians on the proper use of the instruments.

By the end of the training, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Graston Technique© brand instruments, GT treatments, potential effects, and benefits.
  • Identify and discuss the indications, contraindications (relative and absolute) of GT.
  • Review and develop a better understanding of soft tissue injury, healing and potential reactivity to instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (therapeutic and adverse).
  • Develop skill and competence in the GT application of IASTM to the major regions of soft tissue.

INSTRUCTOR

Larry Munger

Larry works at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center as an assistant professor in the Master's of Athletic Training program. He continues his clinical work by spending time at Lubbock Christian University, covering specific rehabilitation needs and game coverage. Dr. Munger has worked in a variety of athletic training settings ranging from collegiate and professional sports, to rehabilitation clinics, and as an educator in both undergrad and graduate programs for athletic training and physical therapy. Assignments have included the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe, Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer, Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University, William Jewell College, and multiple Sports Medicine clinics. Dr. Munger graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree with an emphasis in human movement/higher education from Texas Tech University. He earned a Master of Science in sports health care from Arizona School of Health Sciences and undergraduate degree in sports science from the University of Kansas. In addition to being a certified and licensed athletic trainer, he is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Dr. Munger is a lifetime learner who has gained advanced training and certifications in manual therapy, corrective exercise and rehabilitation, and movement screening techniques which include: Graston Technique, Fascial Manipulation, Fascial Distortion Model, Applied Functional Science, Corrective Exercise, Blood Flow Restriction rehabilitation, and Movement Screenings and Assessments.

3 HOUR PRECOURSE
Participants will identify & discuss the effects, benefits, physiological responses, indications & contraindications for the Graston Technique® therapy.
  • Welcome and introduction to technique
  • History, physiological rationale of IASTM, principles relating to soft-tissue dysfunction
  • Indications & contraindications
  • Anticipated responses and results from using GT instruments on soft-tissue conditions

Participants will observe & then demonstrate proper handholds and treatment strokes using GT instruments.
  • Introduction to the six GT stainless steel instruments
  • Description of each instrument
  • Proper handholds and treatment strokes
  • Lab instruction in scanning, sweeping, strumming, brushing, swiveling, scooping, j-strokes and framing on anterior thigh
  • How to make a soft-tissue assessment using the GT scanner
