Overview

The primary objective of the Essential course is to develop an understanding of Graston Technique© therapy (GT) and how to apply it into the full spectrum of musculoskeletal treatment approaches. The course also instructs clinicians on the proper use of the instruments.

By the end of the training, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Graston Technique© brand instruments, GT treatments, potential effects, and benefits.
  • Identify and discuss the indications, contraindications (relative and absolute) of GT.
  • Review and develop a better understanding of soft tissue injury, healing and potential reactivity to instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (therapeutic and adverse).
  • Develop skill and competence in the GT application of IASTM to the major regions of soft tissue.

INSTRUCTOR

John Dang

John is a part-time faculty member at the Vancouver College of Massage Therapy, as well as a guest lecturer at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine. He has extensive training in Active Release Technique, Selective Functional Movement Assessment, and is a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner. He also holds a level 3 medical pro designation with the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI). He has been utilizing Graston Technique� therapy as part of his comprehensive approach to soft tissue rehabilitation for many years with incredible clinical outcomes and became part of the GT instructional team in 2011. He is currently undertaking his Master of Science in Human and Anatomy and Physiology Instruction through New York Chiropractic College, as he believes that to be a great clinician, one must be a great educator. He continues to remain passionate about sharing his experience and knowledge regarding the human body. John graduated from the University of Alberta with a specialization in pharmacology and went on to pursue Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life Chiropractic College West in California. He has practiced as an associate doctor in several multidisciplinary clinics in both Calgary and Vancouver, but now brings his experience and expertise to Columbia Integrated Health Centre as the Clinical Director. He currently works alongside a team of highly skilled clinicians including physiotherapists, registered massage therapists, chiropractors, kinesiologists, and acupuncturists.

3 HOUR PRECOURSE
Participants will identify & discuss the effects, benefits, physiological responses, indications & contraindications for the Graston Technique® therapy.
  • Welcome and introduction to technique
  • History, physiological rationale of IASTM, principles relating to soft-tissue dysfunction
  • Indications & contraindications
  • Anticipated responses and results from using GT instruments on soft-tissue conditions

Participants will observe & then demonstrate proper handholds and treatment strokes using GT instruments.
  • Introduction to the six GT stainless steel instruments
  • Description of each instrument
  • Proper handholds and treatment strokes
  • Lab instruction in scanning, sweeping, strumming, brushing, swiveling, scooping, j-strokes and framing on anterior thigh
  • How to make a soft-tissue assessment using the GT scanner
